French distributor EuropaCorp woo Chinese with Fundamental deal

Luc Besson's new film Malavita, starring Robert de Niro and Michelle Pfeiffer, will be the first film to be distributed under the deal

In a bid to “establish a presence in the Chinese market,” Paris-based powerhouse production company EuropaCorp has signed an exclusive distribution and co-production deal with Chinese distributor Fundamental Films.

Fundamental will distribute all of EuropaCorp’s productions – currently a slate of around 15 – over the next three years.

First up will be Luc Besson’s forthcoming Malavita, which stars Robert de Niro, Michelle Pfeiffer and Tommy Lee Jones and will shoot in Paris this August.

Fundamental have led the way in distributing American and European titles throughout China, including Limitless, Killer Elite and The Grey in 2011.

Fundamental has already committed to co-producing three of those titles, while EuropaCorp will potentially sell and distribute three Chinese films in return.

The Chinese audience is the most coveted territory in the world right now, with a string of Hollywood production companies investing heavily in Chinese co-production deals.

Speaking on behalf of EuropaCorp, The Fifth Element and Leon director Luc Besson said: “The Chinese public has shown in its taste for EuropaCorp films in the past, and the success of Transporter 3 and Adèle: Rise of the Mummy in China is heartwarming. I am particularly happy with this partnership. EuropaCorp’s films will be in very good hands.”

EuropaCorp CEO Christophe Lambert said: “Given their know-how and market position, Fundamental Films is the ideal partner for us. This agreement is highly strategic for EuropaCorp because it ensures that the studio will have a strong position in China, allowing it to fully benefit from the extraordinary growth in this market.”
