Golden Globe winners Hugh Jackman and Anne Hathaway in Tom Hooper’s Les Miserables.
Based on Victor Hugo’s novel, British director Hooper’s filmic adaption of the stage musical earned Jackman the Globe for musical or comedy actor as tragic hero Jean Valjean, while Hathaway won supporting actress for her portrayal of Fantine.
But Les Miserables prospects of taking the Oscar best picture will be impeded by the fact Hooper was not nominated for best director.
Ben Affleck also unexpectedly won the best director Globe award for Argo, his hostage thriller based around a fictional film, despite not being nominated for a Best Director Oscar.
Jennifer Lawrence won best musical or comedy actress for David O. Russell’s Silver Linings Playbook while Christoph Waltz took home the best supporting actor Globe for his role in Quentin Tarantino’s Django Unchained.
The former American President Bill Clinton made a surprise appearance to introduce Spielberg’s best drama nominated Lincoln. Clinton described the civil war President Abraham Lincoln’s fight to force through Congress the 13th Amendment which would abolishing slavery before his assassination as an effort ”forged in a cauldron of both principle and compromise. This brilliant film shows us how he did it and gives us hope that we can do it again.”
Despite Clinton’s endorsement, it was a disappointing evening for Lincoln, which lead the Globes with seven nominations but lost out in the best director category for Spielberg, supporting actress for Sally Field and supporting actor for Tommy Lee Jones. The film also lost for screenplay, a prize that went to Tarantino for Django Unchained. Daniel Day-Lewis, though, walked away with the best actor prize for his portrayal of the President, which took a year to prepare.
The Palme D’or winning Amour at last May’s Cannes film festival, directed by the Austrian director Michael Haneke, won the Globe for foreign-language film, and is a best picture nominee for the Oscars.
HBO’s Game Change - about Senator John McCain’s decision to pick Alaskan Governor Sarah Palin as his running mate during the 2008 Presidential election – won best TV miniseries or movie. Julianne Moore won a best actress Globe for her role as Palin, while earned Ed Harris a supporting actor prize for his portrayal of John McCain. Best actor in a miniseries or movie went to Kevin Costner for Hatfields & McCoys. Homeland was named best TV drama series, and its stars Claire Danes and Damian Lewis received the dramatic acting awards.
