Hong Kong action star Jackie Chan will join the Motion Picture Association of America Chairman Chris Dodd to formerly launch the summit, which will take place at the Shangri-La Hotel, Toronto, on September 10.
TIFF artistic director Cameron Bailey “As both a key launch pad for films in North America and home to huge audiences for Asian cinema, we think Toronto can be a prime meeting place for the Asian and western film industries.”
The Asian Film Summit is the latest example of Western cinema courting the east. Jeffrey Katzenberg’s Dreamworks Animation is spending $330m on a media centre in Shanhai, while state-backed Chinese production company National Film Capital recently announced ten US-Chinese co-productions worth $300m.
Passes to the Toronto Asian Film Summit go on sale July 20, while the Toronto International Film Festival will run between September 6 and 16.
