Netflix to fund and stream full first season of David Fincher’s TV series House of Cards

David Fincher, director and Executive Producer of the Netflix-funded House of Cards

The entire first season of the David Fincher-directed, Netflix-funded original TV series House of Cards will be available to stream online on 1 February 2013, the company have announced.

The highly-anticipated series from the director of  Social Network,  Se7en and Fight Club was written by screenwriter Beau Willimon – whose credits include Farragut North and The Ides of March – and Eric Roth – the Oscar winning writer of Forrest Gump and Munich.

Funding such a star-powered series is a highly ambitious move into original programming and content creation for the Californian-based video rental and streaming company Netflix, who have recently recorded massive profits as one of the leading worldwide providers of home entertainment.

The series stars Oscar winner Kevin Spacey and Robin Wright as married couple Francis and Clare Underwood in a show based on the successful BBC miniseries of the same name. Fincher is due to direct the first two episodes, and also has an Executive Producer credit along with Spacey.

The drama’s second season is due to begin production in spring 2013.

Chief content officer of Netflix Ted Sarandos said: “House of Cards combines the best of filmmaking with the best of television. Beau Willimon’s compelling narrative, David Fincher’s unparalleled craftsmanship, indelible performances by Kevin Spacey and the rest of the cast unite to create a gripping story and new kind of viewing experience for Netflix members.

“In offering the entire season at once, Netflix is giving viewers complete control over how and when they watch the show.”
