Paul Dano is to play the Beach Boys frontman Brian Wilson in a new biopic about the 60s musician called Love & Mercy, to be directed by Bill Pohlad and written by Oren Moverman.
Pohlad produced Terrence Malick’s The Tree of Life, while screenwriter Moverman wrote and directed the Oscar-nominated The Messenger in 2010 and 2012’s critically acclaimed Rampart.
Dano – who is interviewed in the Insider’s POV feature of movieScope issue 32 – will play the younger Wilson with another uncast actor playing the modern day Wilson.
Reacting to the film, Brian Wilson said in a statement: “I am thrilled that Paul Dano has signed on to play me during one of my most creative explosions and most fulfilling musical times in my career.
“I still can’t believe how cool it is that my life will be portrayed on the big screen and to have Bill Pohlad as the captain of the Sloop John B is amazing.”
Dano, best known for his roles in Paul Thomas Anderson’s There Will Be Blood and girlfriend Zoe Kazan’s recent romantic comedy Ruby Sparks, can next be seen in Denis Villeneuve’s Prisoners with Hugh Jackman and Jake Gyllenhaal and Steve McQueen’s Twelve Years a Slave, which also stars Brad Pitt.
