Sundance buyers circle ‘Beasts’ after standing ovation

First-time filmmaker Benh Zeitlin looks to be hot property at Sundance at the moment with his debut, “Beasts of the Southern Wild”.

According to the trades, the film drew large crowds and standing ovation at it’s showing on Friday with a number of high profile buyers (including Fox, Sony Pictures Classics, Focus and The Weinstein Co) circling. This, even though some have described it as ‘uneven‘ with uncertain ‘commercial prospects’.

Made up of a cast of amateur actors, the film centres on Hushpuppy a six year old girl (played by newcomer Quvenzhane Wallis) who together with her ailing father and fellow New Orleans neighbours, refuse to leave their water-filled homes as sea-levels rise.
