Pan-national Latin Film Festival 4+1 hosts Werner Herzog retrospective

The festival is to focus on the German director's documentary work.

A retrospective of the German director Werner Herzog’s documentaries will be held at this year’s pan-national 4+1 Film Festival, to be held simultaneously in the Latin American cities of Bogota, Buenos Aires, Mexico City, Madrid and Rio de Janeiro between November 21 and 25.

Herzog will attend the festival in Rio de Janeiro, the official headquarters for the third edition of festival, which will screen films including Little Dieter Needs To Fly (1998) – which was remade as the drama Rescue Dawn (2006) - as well the death row documentary Into the Abyss (2011).

Also screening is My Best Fiend (1999), Herzog’s examination of his conflicted relationship with late actor Klaus Kinski, with whom he collaborated for films including Aguirre, the Wrath of God (1972) and Fitzcarraldo (1982).

The festival will also show Herzog’s horror film Nosferatu, The Vampyre (1978) and the science fiction film The Wild Blue Yonder (2005).

Programmer for the 4+1 Festival Gonzalo de Pedro Amatria said: “We want to pay tribute to Werner Herzog for his ability to surprise, his steadfastness in refusing to follow fads and staying true to himself and also to his unique understanding of cinema which seems to secretly link poetry, documentary and science fiction together.”
