The Past is a Foreign Country
When I was 20ish, I wrote a travelogue of my inter-railing escapades through Europe and my extended hiatus in the Greek Isles and beyond… Eventually though, as I transformed myself into a real life shaggy-haired traveler, I ditched those journals to make space in my rucksack for other, more important, things…lumps of Feta Cheese, a couple of dog-ended Tom Robbins novels and a Berreta 9mm (joke)… It didn’t bother me really, I have rather enjoyed my memories slowly congealing over time into waves of semi-nostalgic forgetfulness.
Still, as an avid filmgoer in whichever country I happened to be, I often regret not having made copious lists of what I saw, when I saw it, where I saw it and who i saw it with… (It kind of bugs me that I can no longer remember whether I watched Wim Wenders’ PARIS, TEXAS in the ‘cinema in a windmill’ that was a regular haunt of mine in one of my less than salubrious stomping grounds somewhere in the north of Holland, or in one of those open-air evening projector sessions outside the Taverna that I used to work in on the island of Crete…
I’m pretty sure it was the windmill, but I wouldn’t bet my life on it…
So, I’m hoping that this blog will serve in part as a way of retaining a bit of clarity in my world… at least, that’s the idea, as well as (it goes without saying) of bigging up the name of movieScope at every opportunity…
