My first blog posting
Welcome to the new movieScope blog dedicated to all things New Talent. The idea came about following a year of the One to Watch columns in the magazine. For those of you not familiar with these, they’re a series of columns dedicated to the actors, directors, writers and producers who we (OK, I) happen to think show a lot of promise in their field.
On the back of the columns, I’ve had many enquiries from filmmakers. Some of these have been downright scary (someone trying to plug a two year old girl who seems to have made more TV appearances than William Shatner springs to mind), but often they’ve been from people who are genuinely talented and just want a shot at some much needed exposure. I can’t put everyone in the magazine, so the idea for the blog was born! As well as giving people a platform, I’ll also be updating y’all on what our former One to Watch contenders are doing now.
My other interest in writing this blog is; what’s being done to support all the new talent out there? There are plenty of schemes, awards and initiatives that claim to nurture fledgling filmmakers, some of them great and some of them downright exploitative. What’s your opinion/experience? Do you think enough is being done to support certain demographics? I’d love to hear from you: drop me a mail at lizhobbs*at*moviescopemag.com. It’s all about you!
